What Is Twig Science?

Three young students engaged in a science lesson involving a water bottle and a windmill

Twig Science is a comprehensive, NGSS-aligned science program for grades PreK–8. It’s full of exciting, real-world STEM challenges that spark student engagement and a long-lasting love of science.

Why Become a Research Partner?

Imagine Learning invites school districts to take part in a research study evaluating the impact of Twig Science on student science achievement. This research will empower both your district and schools nationwide to make data-driven decisions that improve student outcomes.

star

Access to a high-quality digital literacy program

Half of your students will receive access to Twig Science, a program designed to teach students to explore the world around them through the lens of a scientist. Access may be extended to all students after the completion of the study.

star

Meaningful data to drive change

Your district will receive in-depth reports and insights from the study. The results will allow you to compare students using the program with those who aren’t, providing powerful evidence to guide future curricular decisions.

star

A national impact

By joining this study, your district will contribute to research that has the potential to transform science education nationwide. The data collected will help schools across the country implement best practices.

What Does This Research Study Look Like?

1

Use Twig Science in some classrooms

How do you determine who uses the program?

Most commonly, teachers are given the choice to opt into using the program in their classroom.

What about classrooms that do not use Twig Science?

Non-user classrooms will continue with whatever science curriculum is already in place.

2

Complete all weekly lessons, activities, and group work as outlined in the teacher-designated instructional path. Also, complete formative assessments following each lesson and summative assessments at the end of each unit.

Facilitate a student-centered and three-dimensional instructional approach and scientific discourse and reasoning. Assign, review, grade, and monitor progress on student assignments and assessments.

3

Administer a standardized science assessment

Who has to take the assessment?

All participating students in both user and non-user classrooms must take the assessment.

Will this be a new assessment?

If your district already administers a standardized science benchmark assessment (e.g., NWEA), no additional assessments need to be administered. If not, we can explore new assessment options.

What is the value of comparative research studies?

Experts agree that comparative research provides conclusive information regarding program effectiveness. While this research design requires the selection of program users and non-user groups, it provides many benefits, including:

Fair and balanced research

To truly evaluate the program’s effectiveness, it’s essential to have a control group (students who do not use the program) to compare outcomes. This ensures the findings are scientifically sound and can lead to lasting improvements in education.

Opportunity for future program expansion

Access to Twig Science may be expanded to all students after the completion of the study. Implement the program in additional classrooms with experience and confidence.

No student left behind

Even without Twig Science in the first year, all control group students will continue to receive the high-quality instruction already provided by your schools. The control group will still benefit from the high instructional standards your district maintains.
