Making the Shift to Problem-based Mathematics Instruction

This Chicago area district wanted to provide equitable access to

mathematics instruction for all students. Evaluation criteria for a

new instructional program to be implemented in fall 2021 included:

 High-quality instructional materials
 Strong focus on grade-level standards
 Problem-based instructional design
 Promotion of discourse and communication
 Embedded mathematical practices
 Equity and access for all learners
 Mathematical language support
 Blended print + digital resources
CCSD59 began implementing Imagine Learning Illustrative

Mathematics for Grades K–8 in fall 2021. Imagine Learning partnered

with the district to support implementation through the pandemic

and during the transition from distance to classroom learning.

Student perceptions of math instruction in CCSD59

increased substantially after the introduction of Imagine

Learning Illustrative Mathematics compared to students

in the state as a whole.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is administered
to students in Grades 3–8. CCSD59 experienced a larger

increase in IAR math proficiency rates between 2021

and 2022 than the state overall. Notably, the district

outperformed the state by over 10% at Grade 3, with

significant improvement also seen in Grades 4, 6, and 8.

Low-income students, English learners, students with

disabilities, and students with IEPs experienced larger

increases in IAR math proficiency rates between 2021

and 2022 in CCSD59 than in the state overall.
